Pavol Demitra laid to rest in Trencin
Gaborik speaks at Demitra’s funeral.
On a day of rain and cold, Pavol Demitra was laid to rest in Trencin, after a funeral which thousands attended. SME.sk reported on the heartfelt ceremony, one attended by fellow Slovak hockey stars Zdeno Chara, Marian Gaborik and Marian Hossa, among others. On the eve of training camp in North America, Demitra’s comrades flew home for he event. Thousands of fans were there, as well. The priest leading the ceremony noted the tears shed when Demitra announced his retirement from representation of the Slovak national team at the IIHF world championships this spring are nothing compared to the tears shed in the last week. Cheers of “Demitra” erupted at his urging, though. A cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” played in what appears to have been an extremely somber affair. Marian Gaborik spoke as well, surrounded by his national team teammates, about Demitra’s qualities as a player, and the need to remember number 38 forever and always in Slovak hockey. For a small town, and a tiny country, it’s a message that hopefully won’t be lost on anyone.
